The Alcohol. Think Again West Coast Waves launch their 2011/12 season campaign today, with the announcement of signing WA’s own former Olympian Rohanee Cox.

Securing the signature of the renowned ex-Opals squad member is an exciting development for the team; yet another step in a positive direction following their successful 2010/11 season.

Cox is an experienced player who will undoubtedly be an asset to the Waves roster this season, having been a part of the silver medal winning Opals squad at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Further to her international playing experience, Cox has played in the WNBL since 1996; first suiting up for the AIS before being signed to Perth and then Townsville.

In 2007, Cox was the recipient of Female Sportsperson of the Year at The Deadlys and in the same year was also awarded the Robyn Maher International Player of the Year Award.

Returning to play in Perth is something Cox is particularly excited about and playing in front of her home crowd is an inviting prospect.

On signing with West Coast, Cox says: “It’s exciting to be returning home to WA to play in the WNBL in front of my family and friends.  It feels like a whirlwind journey that I have had throughout my playing career and I am most excited to finally come back to where it all began.”

“I have had many ups and downs in my career but feel that all of my experiences have made me who I am today.  I look forward to being a role model to junior athletes in WA and look forward to helping others achieve their dreams and aspirations.”

Coming off their most successful season in a decade, the evolving Waves team is shaping up for another successful season under the experienced guidance of Head Coach David Herbert.

On Cox’s signing, Herbert says: “When I first looked at recruiting for the West Coast Waves this season, one name came to mind and that was Rohanee Cox.  She is a true ambassador for indigenous athletes throughout WA and Australia alike.  She has triumphed over many hurdles and obstacles and it is fantastic to have signed Rohanee for the upcoming  season.” 

“I have really focused in on bringing WA talent back to the state and am so pleased that Rohanee has agreed to terms with us. She will add athleticism and versatility to a young group of players and I look forward to coaching her again.  To bring back another WA Olympian and someone who has achieved so much is fantastic.”
