Through the month of October five Associations hosted the Term 4 “Smarter Than Smoking” Association Cups which is a primary schools competition run by Basketball WA in conjunction with School Sports WA.
East Perth, Kalamunda, Mandurah, Cockburn and Perth each hosted a carnival day involving 37 schools, 90 teams and engaging over 1,000 children in a fun round robin competition.
In addition to these carnival days each school who registered a team into an Association Cup was eligible to receive an in school basketball clinic prior to the carnival with experienced development officers visiting schools and teaching close to 1,400 students the game of basketball.
Basketball WA Development Manager, Josh Farnworth said “The Association Cup program is a fantastic way of engaging young athletes and introducing them to the game of basketball as well as the local Associations. This year has seen the program grow once again and the response from the schools has been positive with the kids thoroughly enjoying the in school clinics and the carnival days. I look forward to seeing a number of the kids continue on with basketball and hopefully signing up with their local association after being introduced to the game at the Cups.”
The program concludes each year with the Champions Cup which is this year being held at the WA Basketball Centre on Thursday, December 6th 2012. The Champions Cup is the “Cup of Cups” with all victorious schools and runners up from each of the individual cups competing to be named the Champion School for 2012.
Registrations are now open for Term 1 Association Cups and schools can nominate via the School Sports WA website.
