WA Teams Taste Victory on Day Four

There was a little more success for the WA teams on day four of the Under 20 & Ivor Burge Championships yesterday with two wins from three games.

The Ivor Burge Women got the winning feeling started early with a 50-45 win over South Australia in the opening game, registering their first win of the tournament.

WA started off well with an 11 point lead by the main break, which extended to a 12 point lead at three quarter time.

South Australia came home strong in the fourth quarter, restricting WA to just seven points. The home side did hold on and recorded their first win.

Natasha Davis worked hard for WA with 19 points and 30 rebounds while Laura O’Malley had 14 points and 9 rebounds.

South Australia was led by Katie Williams (16 points) and Amy Howard (15 points).

The Ivor Burge Men were not as lucky in their game against South Australia later in the day. The home side found themselves down 24-14 at the first break.

However South Australia pushed hard in the second quarter 28-9 to lead by 29 points at half time, which set up a 111-49 victory to the visitors.

The Under 20 Women hit the court for the last game of the day, playing Tasmania in their quarter final. A strong opening quarter saw the home side take a comfortable 30-14 lead by quarter time.

Tasmania steadied in the second but could only reduce the margin to 15 at the half time break.

The third quarter belonged to WA who set up a winning 22 point lead heading in to the last break.

Tasmania showed more fight in the fourth, winning the period by nine points however the damage was done with WA registering a 89-76 win to move on to the Semi-Finals.

Jessie Edwards led the scoring for WA again with 20 points and 9 rebounds while Hannah Throns had 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Mikayla Pirini led the team well with 9 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds in a strong showing while Jessie Clayton also registered double figures with 10 points.

The Women now enjoy a day off before facing NSW in the Semi-Finals on Friday.

Today’s games see the Ivor Burge teams finish their pool games with the WA women taking on NSW Country at 11:00am. The Men will play Tasmania at 5:00pm in another evening game.

The Under 20 Men will hit the court after a day’s rest in their quarter finals game against Victoria at 5:00pm.
