Basketball WA launches State Performance Program (SPP)

“DEVELOPING AND PREPARING YOUNG BASKETBALL ATHLETES TO REPRESENT WA”

Following a review of its High Performance Programs, Basketball WA is pleased to announce the launching of the State Performance Program (SPP) for 2015/16.

In order to create a talent identification and development model that meets the needs of our athlete and coach pathways, assists the State body in achieving its broad objectives and best prepares our WA State teams for National Championships the State Performance Program (SPP) has been developed.

The State Performance Program (SPP) will be the focus of Basketball WA’s High Performance Program (HPP) and will replace the National Intensive Training Program (NITP).

Basketball WA High Performance Manager Brett Coxsedge expressed his excitement regarding the new program.

“Previously, the NITP and State Team Program had some linkages and crossover; the new structure aims to provide structure to this process and allows the State Team Coaches to have much needed support and direction from Basketball WA”

Applications for athletes to be involved in the SPP are now open with Metropolitan athletes required to attend trials, whilst Country athletes are required to submit an application form.

WHAT IS THE STATE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM?

  • The SPP involves the systematic and progressive identification, selection and development of athletes in the Under 16 and Under 18 age groups (born 1999-2002), in the aim of preparing players to represent WA at the Australian Junior Championships.
  • This program will be integrated into our current state team model and will include athletes with potential to represent WA at a National Championship within our state team program.
  • Previously, the NITP and State Team Program had some linkages and crossover; the new structure aims to provide structure to this process and allows the State Team Coaches to have much needed support and direction from Basketball WA.
  • The program will operate in both Metropolitan and Country Regions – to enable players to access specialised and dedicated individual and team resources, regardless of the athlete’s location in the state.
