Boomers Visit Opens Up Local Opportunities

With the Golden Star Australian Boomers arriving in Perth this coming week in preparation for their clash with the Chinese National Team in the YOUYI games next Friday, select opportunities have opened up for the local WA basketball community.

Appointed as the Assistant Manager to help Boomers Manager Nic Mercer, Kalamunda Eastern Suns Assistant Coach Peter Nalder will get an opportunity to expand on his basketball experiences after being an enthusiastic volunteer in recent years. Recognised for his work to the sport at the Annual Department of Sport and Recreation Coaches Awards Dinner last Friday night, Peter has also filled the positions of West Coast Waves Assistant Coach/Assistant Road Manager, Under 18 WA Country Women Assistant Coach in 2011 along with his Assistant Coach position in WSBL and being in charge of the Kalamunda Under 18 Girls in WABL.

Wanneroo Wolves SBL Mens Assistant Coach Luke Brennan has been given the chance to meet and help the Boomers Coaching staff with planning in a special one-day coaches discussion in preparation for the camp week. Brennan, also a part of the Under 16 WA Metro Boys coaching staff in 2011 has recently moved into coaching after playing for various State Teams as a Junior and SBL for the Wolfpack.

WA’s young athletes also received an opportunity to experience the Boomers camp this week with the selection of identified NITP athletes to act as Junior Boomers Assistants for the week. The positions, seen as a reward to aspiring athletes who display commitment, potential and effort will give the athletes a chance to rub shoulders with elite players possibly in line to represent Australia in an international tournament.
