BWA WELCOMES A $10M INVESTMENT – MIKE BARNETT SPORTS COMPLEX

BASKETBALL WA WELCOMES A $10 MILLION INVESTMENT TOWARDS UPGRADES OF THE MIKE BARNETT SPORTS COMPLEX

Basketball WA is pleased with today’s announcement that the Cook Labor Government will invest $10 million towards upgrades at the Mike Barnett Sports Complex in Rockingham, delivering additional indoor courts for our basketball community and much-needed maintenance works for the popular community facility.

As part of the project, the Cook Government will provide $2 million for the City of Rockingham to replace the existing roof and deliver other important upgrades to address poor ventilation for several courts.

A further $8 million has been allocated towards constructing new indoor courts for basketball, plugging a much-needed gap in the local community for indoor sporting facilities.

The upgrades will help meet the growing demand for courts in the wider Rockingham area and ensure that the existing complex remains fit for purpose.

Planning for the new courts will progress in partnership with the City of Rockingham and Rockingham Basketball and Recreation Association.

Acting CEO of Basketball WA Evan Stewart said, “This is an exciting announcement for our sport and reflects the work we have done over the past 5 years to put basketball on the political spectrum. Over the coming months, we will continue working alongside Federal, State and Local Governments to promote our sport and needs. With waiting lists of children unable to play our sport across the Peel and Metropolitan, it is clear there is a high demand for more basketball facilities in our community.

President of the Rockingham Basketball and Recreation Association, Warren Boucaut, emphasised the importance of the commitment saying, “The Rockingham Basketball and Recreation Association has been working closely with the City of Rockingham on the expansion of available indoor courts at Mike Barnett Sporting Complex. The board and I are delighted with the commitment to the Rockingham community by the Cook Labor Government. I look forward to working with the City of Rockingham to continue to create positive outcomes for our basketball community collaboratively.”
