Champion Schools Cup Titles Decided

Basketball WA with the help of School Sport WA, held what is hoped as the first of many Champion School’s Cup Carnival events last week on Wednesday 1st December.

An invitation carnival only, Teams participating had already won or shown promise in their local Association Cup Carnival, which consisted of a single day of carnival-style basketball (5 hours), contested by local primary schools.

After the completion of all Association Cup Carnival days, the Champion School’s Cup tournament was held in which the winners of each Association Cup came together to compete, representing not only their school, but their local association.  Over 120 kids took part in this event. The inaugural winner were Joondalup Primary School (Girls) & Banskia Park Primary School (Boys).

2010 is the first year for this Association Cup programme to run. Using the Go for 2&5 Basketball Development Program as a vehicle, an introduction to structured basketball was provided for primary schools through the Association Cup programme.  Basketball WA Development Officers provided the necessary coaching aides to produce teams able to compete in the tournament.

Development Manager Vanessa Lock praised the program as a great new initiative set up by former Development Officer Brett Kranz-Little.  “There is now the progression from the clinics that the DO’s run at the schools through to getting the players into their nearest association and allowing them to experience what playing in a tournament and representation is all about.  Not only does it benefit the kids but Associations too as by getting on board, they then have the ability to expand their own junior domestic competitions”.
