Passing of Christine Boyd (Boydy)

It is with great sorrow and with a heavy heart that we learn of the passing of one of our very own members of our Basketball family.  Christine Boyd sadly passed away 3.30am Monday morning (17 December) in hospital, surrounded by family. Christine had been recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer.

Christine was a talented and passionate basketballer within our community with a great history of amazing achievements.

Christine played in the WA State Country team; played with the Australian Institute of Sport in the WNBL in 1996, whilst holding a scholarship. On return to WA, Christine then commenced her career with the Lynx in 1997, playing 133 WNBL games and was also the 2002 Perth Lynx – Most Valuable Player.

Christine played in the State Basketball League with the Wanneroo Wolves, Perth Redbacks and also Perry Lakes, winning MVP awards along the way. Boydy has also had international stints with Belgian Champions Namur and in the Chinese Professional League with Chunquing.

Christine also worked with us at Basketball WA as a Development Officer for about 2-3 years.  She was a very valuable member who always had a  smile and a laugh with everyone.

Christine’s funeral will be held this Thursday 20 December at 10.30am at the Cunderdin Sports Club, Lundy Avenue, Cunderdin.

To honour Christine, the Perth Lynx will be holding a minute’s silence at the upcoming Perth Lynx vs Sydney Flames game this Sunday. Team and coaches will be donning black stripes.

On behalf of the Board, staff and members of Basketball WA, we send our condolences and thoughts to Christine’s family and friends.  Basketball will be forever grateful for Christine’s contribution to our wonderful sport.
