Two Athletes Named in Gems Team

Two WA athletes have been announced in the Australian Gems team competing in the Under 19 FIBA World Championships in Russia from 18-26 July.

Madeleine Dennis (Kalamunda) and Mikayla Pirini (Willetton) were both announced in the team this morning, following a successful camp in Canberra last weekend 23-28 May.

The Gems will leave on 3 July to play two games against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, as well as participate in a short training camp. They will then head to Spain for a Pre-Worlds Tournament against Spain, Canada and USA before arriving in Russia two days before their World Championship begins against South Korea, Brazil and Serbia.

Pirini, currently at the National Centre of Excellence on a full-time scholarship, played with the West Coast Waves in the WNBL last season and is a Willetton junior who has played over 60 SBL games in three seasons.

Dennis, a Stirling junior, was part of the Australian Under 17 FIBA World Championship team in 2014. Now with Kalamunda, Dennis is in her fourth season of SBL and has played over 30 games.

Basketball WA congratulates both athletes on their selection and wishes them well for the upcoming Tournaments.
