U/16 Nationals Update – Day Two

Sunday proved to be a good day for WA Basketball at the U16 Autralian Junior Championships in Adelaide with WA teams winning 3 of 4 games played.

The WA Country boys got their first win of the tournament with a close 54-50 win over SA Country. Taj Flemming had a double-double with 18pts and 20 rebounds. He was well supported by Travis Durnin (12pts and 9 rebounds) while Joel Bellinger-Brown (10 rebounds and 6pts) and Thomas Boyle (11 rebounds) also played strong.

The WA Country girls played a very strong NSW Country team and went down 80-43. Unfortunately WA Country’s high turnover count cost the team any chance of victory.  Mackenzie Hoycard toiled hard for the whole game finishing with 14 points and 18 rebounds.

The WA Metro boys bounced back from their overtime loss the night before against QLD North to defeat Tasmania 79-48. No more than five players scored in double figures for WA, with Mitch McKenna (11pts and 11 rebounds) and Corey Shervill (14pts and 11 rebounds) recording double-doubles. The team also shot the ball well from beyond the arc knocking down 9 three pointers for the game.

The day finished on a high with the WA Metro girls grinding out a 56-53 win over QLD South. Amy Atwell (12pts and 9 rebounds) and Jess Spedding (13pts) led the scoring, while Mia Satie and Cameron Flynn grabbed 9 rebounds each. The win sees the girls remain undefeated after two games.
