WA Success at Australian Schools Championship

Willetton Senior High School again were the Basketball WA nominees for the Championship Division of the Australian Schools Championship in Newcastle, NSW.

The Men’s team made it through to the Grand Final against Caufield Grammar School where they narrowly went down 52-46 to claim the silver medal. The game wrap from the Basketball Australia website is below:

After a slow start Caulfield Grammar fought back to win the gold medal in the Men’s Championship Division, downing Willetton SH 52-46.

Caulfield’s Jared Dettmann top-scored with a 17 point, 10 rebound double double. AIS scholarship holder Jackson Hussey led Willetton with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.

Willetton led 16-13 at the first break but Caulfield turned it around with a 13-5 second quarter and take a five point lead into halftime, 26-21.

In the see-sawing match Caulfield stormed back to take a seven point lead midway through the third quarter, but a Simon Grant 3-pointer capped off a 9-0 run into the fourth quarter for Caulfield, keeping their noses in front, 41-39.

The defensive grind continued in the final quarter but Caulfield held on to take the win, and the championship.

The Women’s team made it through to the play-off for fifth and sixth spots and faced off against Westfields Sports High School who came out on top 64-38. Willetton finished the tournament in sixth spot and the game review from the Basketball Australia website is below.

Westfield Sports led from tip off as they down Willetton SH to take fifth place at the championship.

Rachael Cadee led all scorers with 21 points and added 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals for a terrific all-round game.

Establishing a 9-point lead at the first break, 20-11, Westfield Sports dominated as Willetton struggled to convert their chances.

The lead blew out in the third quarter as Willetton could not connect on a single field basket and Westfield Sports controlled the boards.

Willetton stood tough in the final quarter but the result was never in doubt.

WA nominated Referees Jamie Langshaw and John Carlstein also performed well in the Championship Division. With Jamie receiving the Bronze Medal Men’s game and John receiving the Mens 7/8 Play-Off game.

Congratulations to both teams and referee’s on their outstanding success while representing their Schools and WA.

The 2010 WA State Teams for 2010 have all begun training with the Under 20 having selected their final squads and the Under 16 and 18 teams still training strongly. Keep checking the WABL website for full State Team details.
