ANNOUNCEMENT – Return to Play Conditions for Basketball in Perth and Peel Regions

ANNOUNCEMENT – Return to Play Conditions for Basketball in Perth and Peel Regions

After making the difficult decision to cancel Week 3 of the BWA Country Championships, Basketball WA consulted with our Associations regarding the return to play guidelines for clubs in the Perth and Peel Regions.

Basketball WA, with the support of Associations has agreed to suspend all INDOOR competition for ALL age groups the week of 6 – 14 February  in line with when the next stage of restrictions is due to end. We will work with Government and our Associations to understand future restrictions and, if required post this date, whether playing basketball indoors with a mask is something that can be done reasonably and safely.

These guidelines are developed with the primary intention of ensuring good hygiene and restricting the number of people within stadiums at any one time to reduce the chances of person-to-person transmission of COVID-19.

Training is permitted under the following guidelines:

  • Masks must be worn indoors (for players, spectators, staff and officials over the age of 12) at all times, even when training.
  • Masks are not required for players if training is held outdoors while they are training but must be used at all other times.
  • A 4 square metre capacity rule is in place for venues. Associations and clubs must ensure they meet these requirements for their venues.
  • A max of 150 people including players, officials and spectators are allowed at venues.
  • Venues will be required to maintain a contact register for patrons. This will now be a shared responsibility between venues and patrons, penalties may apply for failing to comply.

Our community’s safety and health is a priority, so we will continue to follow the latest guidelines and requirements.

Pending no further community cases, it is our hope that basketball in WA will resume to normal conditions from 12:01 Sunday 14th February. We will continue to update our stakeholders as the situation progresses.
