On Saturday 30 October, Basketball WA presented a Seminar designed to help Basketball Associations with their administration as well as presenting ideas and programs which are designed to assist to attract new members and grow the Association. The seminar was held at the Western Australian Basketball Center.

Gavin Duffy from Horsell International demistified the topic of Basketball Australia’s Insurance program. He gave advice in relation to what is and what is not covered by the group insurance, as well as how to proceed in the face of a claim. The relationship between an Association and the owner/operator of your local facility also generated a lot of discussion.

Basketball WA was proud to launch the new 5 on 5 Association Program, which has been designed to assist basketball associations of all sizes and locations to measure how they are performing, and give support to improve how they run. The program was well received, and should prove a valuable tool for the administration of associations.

Helen Cunningham from the Western Australian Sports Federation spoke on the Working with Children Check Card legislation. Several interesting issues arose, which commanded a lot of discussion. Helen has undertaken to follow up on these issues and report to BWA shortly.

Mat Glasson and Allison Hass had us all on our feet and presented a great talk on the Active After-Schools Communities program. This program has the potential to grow participation in your association in a massive way. The experience of the Perth Redbacks over the past twelve months is testament to this. Gary Prior reported an increase of 5 teams in their local competition directly in relation to their association with Active After-Schools.

Peter Minchin showed us the broad area of administrative assistance for all associations available from the Department of Sport and Recreation. He also showed us the availability of funding assistance and educational opportunities that the Department has on offer.

At the conclusion of the afternoon, a lively and constructive discussion was held with representatives from the Country Basketball Associations.

Overall, the afternoon proved to be an extremely constructive and useful event, with some valuable information becoming available. The opportunity to share experiences and exchange information was also invaluable.
