Basketball WA Welcomes Tyrone Thwaites as Chief Basketball Officer

On behalf of Basketball WA, I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Tyrone Thwaites as the new Chief Basketball Officer of Basketball WA. This newly established role has been created to place a dedicated focus on elevating our Basketball Competitions, High-Performance pathways, and Participation outcomes. Following a rigorous, thorough, and highly competitive recruitment process led by an external panel, Tyrone emerged as the outstanding candidate.

Tyrone is a seasoned leader in the basketball community, boasting a wealth of experience both as a senior executive and coach.  Over the past six and a half years, he has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Cockburn Basketball Association, where he has also led their women’s NBL1 program for the past five years, guiding the team to back-to-back grand finals and securing the 2023 NBL1 West  Championship. His deep passion for the sport, combined with his leadership acumen, energy, and strategic vision, make him the perfect fit to pursuit our initiatives going forward. Tyrone’s appointment marks a pivotal moment as we aim for continuous improvement and excellence across all levels of Basketball in Western Australia.

In his own words, Tyrone expressed his excitement about stepping into this role: “I am incredibly privileged to be at the forefront of Basketball in our state. I’m eager to work with our proud sport across Competitions, High-Performance and Participation outcomes, to not only continue to grow, but ensure our programs are best in class. We’ve seen from recent successes, such as the NBL1 competition being showcased at RAC Arena, highlight the momentum we’re building. With more new players joining the game every day, and an undeniable amount of passionate basketball minds and ideas in Western Australia, there is an opportunity to bring the spotlight to WA for the outstanding outcomes we are capable of producing for the community—and I can’t wait to get started in October.”

As CEO, I’m excited to welcome Tyrone to the Basketball WA team. His leadership, expertise, and passion will be instrumental in driving our Vision and Strategy forward. While we recognise that Cockburn Basketball Association will be losing a key figure in both their Coach and CEO, we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and will work closely with the Cockburn executive team throughout this process.

Congratulations once again to Tyrone on his appointment as Chief Basketball Officer of Basketball WA. We eagerly anticipate his start on Monday, 14 October 2024, and look forward to collaborating with him as we continue to elevate basketball in our state.

Nathan Cave (Basketball WA, CEO)
