Game Development Levy

To our valued players,

On behalf of Basketball Australia and Basketball WA, thank you for being amongst the 1.2 million Australians that participate regularly in our fabulous sport.

Our strength and success at a national and international level is only possible because the sport is equally strong at a community level.

As basketball continues to grow, so too does the need to develop priority areas to support our players, coaches, officials and volunteers. With this in mind, from 1 January 2024, a modest annual Basketball Australia Game Development levy of $5.00+GST per person is being introduced across the country. The levy will be collected by Basketball Australia, and in collaboration with our States and Territory partners, will be directed towards a range of key initiatives.

The decision to introduce a levy has not been taken lightly and has been under discussion with the State and Territory partners for a number of years.

In 2024, additional revenue generated by the levy will be allocated towards:

  • enhancing the development and pathways for match officials
  • building behaviour management campaigns to address abuse towards officials
  • enhancing coach development opportunities and supporting pathways
  • driving digital transformation across the sport.

In the years beyond, the funds derived from the levy will be used to support priorities for the community participants determined on an annual basis collectively by Basketball Australia and all States and Territories to ensure it is directed towards areas benefiting the entire basketball community.

The levy will apply to all players in regular season competitions but does not include coaches, officials, volunteers and administrators, where one or more of these are their only involvement unless they are also registered to play. No matter how many times a week you might play, the levy is only paid once per calendar year.

In Western Australia, the Levy will be automatically collected from participants when you register to play basketball with your club or association; at the same time, you pay your $41.75 BWA participant fee. If you are already a member of BWA this will occur the first time you pay your annual participant fee after 1 January 2024.

The Board of Basketball WA will keep the $41.75 participant fee at the same cost for 2024 in recognising that the cost for the participant will be rising by the $5.00 plus GST Game Development Levy.

You can find more information about the levy and frequently asked questions on the Basketball WA website

Basketball Australia and Basketball WA value the support and dedication of each member in our basketball community. We firmly believe the levy will enable us to deliver an even better basketball experience for everyone involved. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this transition period.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to basketball in Western Australia. Together, we can continue to inspire, empower, and grow the sport we all love.
