Basketball WA is delighted to acknowledge the significant announcement made by the Cook Government this morning, committing $2 million in immediate funding to commence planning for a new indoor sporting facility in Perth’s inner southern suburbs. This funding marks an important step toward addressing facility shortages and building a much-needed dedicated home for the Perth Redbacks, one of WA’s longest-standing basketball clubs.
This development represents a milestone in the long-standing efforts of the Perth Redbacks, who have campaigned with tenacity over the years. The funding is a testament to their commitment and the strong support they have garnered within the community for a facility that will serve as a central hub for basketball and other sports in the southern corridor.
Basketball WA Chair, Fiona Notley, underscored the importance of the initiative, stating, “This government support is a game-changer for our basketball community and for Perth’s oldest club, the Perth Redbacks.”
Basketball WA CEO, Nathan Cave, echoed this sentiment: “Basketball has faced a considerable shortfall in quality facilities, and today’s announcement is tremendously encouraging for our sport. The support for the Redbacks’ vision shows just how effectively the club has united the community around this project. This is a truly significant day for basketball.”
Basketball WA extends its appreciation to the Cook Government for its commitment to sport infrastructure, and to the Redbacks in particular President Anthony Nixon and CEO Ryan Lenegan for their sustained dedication to this cause. Basketball look forward to collaborating with other sports on this project and to seeing this vision become a reality for the benefit of the entire sporting community.

WE NEED MORE PLACES TO PLAY – Perth Redbacks Launch Campaign
The Perth Redbacks is a well-governed Association that holds strong values. The Redbacks are a proud organisation that takes a family and community-focused approach to the development of people and the sport. For the Redbacks to have created and fostered Olympic-level talent and to have such a strong bond in their teams, clubs, and community is remarkable. They have achieved this without a home base and, as an organisation, are stretched across 28 facilities, which is a testament to their commitment to the sport and community.
Basketball WA sees that the Perth Redbacks are part of our High Priority Facility Cohort, and the Redbacks are BWA’s highest facility priority. You don’t have to be a supporter of the Redbacks to support their need for an indoor multi-sport facility; you just have to be a supporter of athletes, kids, families, and participants of all ages and abilities having access to more sporting facilities.
