THE CENTRAL Institute of Technology, in partnership with Basketball WA is giving students the chance to combine academic study with their passion for shooting hoops.

    And several students have been able to watch the Wildcats in training as Central lecturer Michael Coleman enjoys a coaching role with Perth’s top team.

     “It has been a great opportunity for me to work with one of Australia’s best sporting outfits and it means I can pass on even more knowledge and skills to the basketball students at Central,” said Mr Coleman.

    Students enrol in the Certificate IV in Sport (Development) at Leederville. They are then released two mornings a week for basketball sessions designed to improve their technical and tactical skills, plus give them accredited coaching qualifications.

     “I am pretty lucky to be playing basketball and gaining a qualification at the same time,” said student Warren Parker. “It is only a year so it is a pretty quick way to get training that can lead to higher qualifications academically and practical accreditations in coaching.”

     Vlad Alava, the education and training officer at Basketball WA said: “We are really happy to endorse and assist the program at Central. Basketball WA is always keen to help young people forge a career in our sport and the combination of study and practical sessions is an excellent way to do this.”

       As well as spending time on basketball, students also study subjects including sports science, strength and conditioning and event management. The Certificate IV qualification is a pathway to either employment or to higher education.
